Like most people, I have a mental inventory in my head, well detailed and prioritised, consisting of all the beautiful things I would love to have in my wardrobe. I can’t even tell you how long this dress sat there, right at the very top, niggling away. It’s all very shallow, I suppose, but the second I laid eyes on it - nothing I owned even came close and there was no cheaper replica that could suffice. It was all about that dress.

I’m incredibly fortunate to have a boyfriend as generous as mine, he surprised me with it - in the colour-way inspired by a vintage french flag - just to cheer me up one particularly difficult week. That was over a month ago. It’s been hanging on the side of the wardrobe (I couldn’t bare to actually shut it away, where I wouldn’t be able to see it every time I passed through the bedroom), just waiting.

You would think, as I did, that it’s beautiful but distinct shape and silhouette would leave it limited, something that could only be worn one way. But I’ve worn it with heels, I’ve worn it with military boots and socks and I’ve worn it with plimsoll pumps and they all got along fine. It is simply the most amazing summer dress, especially if you fancy being a princess for the day - it makes a particularly nice swooshing motion that I enjoy. One of the many perks.
