Norwegian Wood

Angie Johnson has been designing since the age of 14. She's worked for companies such as Silver Jeans, Industry Jeans and Manager Clothing before launching her own label, Norwegian Wood. Designed and created in Montreal, Canada, Angie has become a designer favourite amongst the biggest fashion blogs; first with her unique and edgy accessories – like her harnesses that were featured on just about every blog - and now with her clothing ranges. As the launch of her new collection approaches, Angie kindly takes some time to talk to me about her designs, her inspirations and what Norwegian Wood is all about …

To a stranger, how would you describe Norwegian Wood?

I would describe it as an eclectic yet modern collection of womens clothing and accessories. Mixing of pattern and texture plays a large part in the look of the collection.

What has been your favourite piece that you've created?

Well, this probably changes from week to week, and I've been designing and selling my stuff since I was 16...but right now it's the Blanket Cardigan from my Fall 2010 collection. I'll be adding it to my online shop in new colours later in October (the initial navy combo has already sold out).

You've come a long way from NW's beginning, what would you say was the most exciting achievement?

Getting to the point where I'm fully within the regular fashion schedule is great, I had to create 3 collections in the last six months to get on schedule, but now I'm there and it feels great.

Your new collection is just launching, tell us a little about that?

Fall 2010 was all about creating the world of this imaginary character I had in my mind. She's a little bit of a shut in, with an obsession for archaeology and geology. She surrounds herself with books, antiques, many rug/tapestries/quilts, and various rock and plant specimens. She's probably not all that tidy either. A little disheveled in a charming way.

What inspires your design process?

I'm inspired by things I see around me in my life, by textiles, books, art...everything is a tiny piece in the creative puzzle.

You're hugely popular amongst fashion bloggers and are featured frequently around the world, who would you say has been your favourite to work with?

It's impossible to choose! I love working with all of them for different reasons. The people I like working with the most are the ones who have their own distinct style, and are less concerned with being "on trend" and more concerned with using fashion as a creative outlet.

What are the three things in your wardrobe that you absolutely can't live without?

A great cardigan (my fave changes every season), good jeans (I worked as a denim designer for many years) and a great pair of flat shoes since I walk a lot (again, new faves every season).

What is the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night?

Norwegian Wood
